I've read quite a bit of zombie fiction, from the astoundingly terrible to the pretty darned good. This book is up there with the good stuff. It's well written, and the author has a style that seems to get out of the way and let the parts of the story happen. The story tells itself, rather than it feeling like an author saying "Look at me, I'm writing!", which is the problem with a lot of the poorer zombie fiction.The only thing that made the author step out of the shadows was the constant perspective shifting. This story follows a lot of separate threads that will finally come together towards the end. There are several perspectives, and at times it does feel a little overwhelming or annoying to jump between them, especially when you are getting to know a character and want to know more. However, it's not terribly done. This is a big story with a lot of lead characters; the author did her best. There are definitely kinks here and there, but overall the story is enjoyable.
One thing that makes me happy about this, on top of being a good story and fairly well written, is the length. It is SO nice to read zombie fiction around this price point that doesn't seem to be ending on a cliff-hanger right in the middle of the story. This book tells a full self-contained story about the beginning of a zombie apocalypse, and it finishes that story with very few loose threads. It is its own self-contained book, AND it is also open for a sequel. It does leave you wanting more, but it doesn't leave you feeling like you are missing half the story, as a number of other such books do. The length of this book leaves you satisfied at the end, full enough for now, but looking forward to the next meal when it comes. :)
If you like zombie fiction, then this book is worth checking out. :)

When this book started I was a little tentative about it. It seemed a bit disjointed and had random snippets of the apocalypse. The bits and pieces quickly began to coalesce into a real tale of survival. The only real concern was at times it got distracting and seemed to be used more as a filler at times.
The book, as a whole, is well written and a good study of interaction between the characters. At times, I think the escapes from zombies and the evil corporate company that caused the disaster a little too easy and convenient. Having a variety of characters and everyone being fair game in the “becoming a zombie” possibility makes the book interesting and I think more realistic. Just because you are a cute little person or super model pretty doesn’t ensure your future.
This view of the apocalypse is what you would imagine. Hospitals and those people with jobs geared toward the support and protecting of the public were the first to die. In the end, everyone is running, ending up finding vehicles, wrecking vehicles and then end up walking, getting separated and struggling for just one more day…one more hour.
One of the most interesting characters is a war vet without use of his legs. He’s smart and does what he has to and as a result saves the life of a young teen age boy.
Riley was a “prepper” and came from a family of disaster preparation enthusiasts. Her family had created a sanctuary in the middle of a government park in northern Canada. She could be the teacher of all things of rugged living but first they had to get there.
Getting to the far away refuge is a long difficult journey and Kristal Stittle is an author that allows the reader to walk along-side the travelers and feel their pain when a fellow traveler is lost. In my opinion, when your eyes fill at a loss, the author has done his job so this is a book well-worth the time to read.
The worst part of Zombie books, in my opinion, is the initial "naive encounter" phase "ooh, are you hurt, let me help you. Ouch you bit me". It gets tiresome watching stupidity in action. Imagine how painful it is, then, to watch this phase unleashed multiple times. This book follows about 15 characters through the initial phase, then the dawning of wisdom and finally to union as a team. This book is well-written and, perhaps because of the time invested in describing the early plight of each character, forces you to become invested in their collective plights. Some of these people you like, some you detest and others you're left wondering. There is a nice balance of rational, logical individuals who are prepared to do the right and smart thing, and some who mindlessly trudge forward with little regard for consequences. Perhaps most riveting in this story is the presence of two evil forces, one of which is unique. There are, of course, the zombies. But there also is an evil group that seeks to capture the still-living for a purpose that only becomes clear towards the end of the book. Not all your favorite characters survive, but those who do survive show surprising positive growth during the entire ordeal. Finally, the book is clearly written to have a sequel, but at least the end point is logical and satisfying. If you can wade through the slow character development, you will most definitely enjoy this book.
